  9.  AB    AIM: To determine the V3 region sequences from HIV-1 isolates from
  10.        heterosexually infected patients from India. METHODOLOGY: PBL samples
  11.        were cocultured with normal PBLs and the DNA was extracted for PCR. The
  12.        1.5 kb gp120 fragment was cloned and the V3 region sequenced. RESULTS:
  13.        All isolates belonged to the C subtype. Most isolates had amino-acid
  14.        residues similar to the V3 loop consensus sequences published in the Los
  15.        Alamos database (Nov '93 III-71). One isolate had a serine in the 6 th
  16.        position of the V3 loop. Another isolate had an arginine in the 1st
  17.        position, alanine in the 20 th position and a phenylalanine in the 22 nd
  18.        position of the V3 loop. These residues have not so far been reported
  19.        for the C subtype in the Los Alamos database. The N-linked glycosylation
  20.        site proximal to the first cysteine residue of the V3 loop was absent in
  21.        all the isolates. CONCLUSION: C subtype of HIV-1 was the strain
  22.        transmitted through the heterosexual route in the HIV-1 isolates
  23.        obtained from India.
